In a significant move, Kolkata is poised to undergo expansion after more than a decade, incorporating three areas to the east and south of the city, thereby adding 60,000 residents. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken the decision to extend its jurisdiction, encompassing neighbourhoods currently under panchayats, with the aim of providing essential urban services to residents who have been lacking these facilities.
Under the proposed plans shared by civic sources, KMC intends to include the moujas (revenue collection units) of Jagadipota and Mukundapur under Kheyadaha II panchayat off the EM Bypass. Approximately 45,000 residents in this area can expect improved civic services. Additionally, Rania mouja in south Kolkata, accommodating 15,000 residents, is also slated to come under KMC's jurisdiction.
Over the past few years, several standalone apartments and complexes have emerged in these regions. However, residents have been grappling with issues such as potholed roads, waterlogging, inadequate street lighting, and a lack of security after dark. Despite the proximity to corporation-administered areas, these communities have been deprived of fundamental urban amenities, including drinking water, proper drainage systems, well-maintained roads, and adequate street lighting.
KMC conducted a survey in Mukundapur and Jagadipota last year, revealing the dire need for basic services in these areas. The addition of these regions to KMC's jurisdiction is expected to contribute significantly to the civic revenue, with an estimated additional revenue of Rs 10 crore to Rs 15 crore.
The corporation plans to enhance essential services, focusing on addressing issues such as waterlogging and poor road conditions, providing potable water, and installing modern street lights. The assessment of properties and levying property tax will be instrumental in generating revenue from these newly included neighbourhoods.
Residents in these areas have welcomed KMC's plans, expressing their anticipation for improved civic amenities. The prospect of proper infrastructure, maintained roads, and initiatives to tackle issues like dengue eradication has raised hopes among the residents. The inclusion of these areas under KMC's jurisdiction is expected to simplify processes related to property valuation and land mutation, bringing relief to the residents.
In conclusion, this expansion initiative by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation marks a significant step towards enhancing the living conditions of residents in these areas. By providing essential urban services and addressing long-standing issues, KMC is poised to positively impact the lives of thousands of people. As these regions become an integral part of the city, the residents can look forward to a future with improved civic amenities, fostering a better quality of life for everyone involved.
