MMRDA plans for six key centres in Mumbai Metropolitan Region

In a strategic move aimed at attracting substantial investments and bolstering economic growth, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has unveiled plans to develop six massive growth centres in key locations, including Bhiwandi, Alibaug, Kalyan, and Thane.
One of the standout projects is the Kharbav growth centre, positioned in close proximity to the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation. The MMRDA anticipates that this location will become a major investment magnet due to its strategic alignment with significant infrastructure projects like the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail, and dedicated freight corridors passing through the area.
Similarly, the Poynad growth centre in Alibaug is expected to benefit significantly from its proximity to the nearing completion Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, the Virar-Alibag multi-modal corridor, and the second international airport under construction in Mumbai. An MMRDA official expressed optimism, stating that the Poynad initiative aims to rejuvenate local areas and provide fresh opportunities, particularly in tourism, construction, real estate, and logistics sectors.
The Kalyan growth centre, managed by a special planning authority under MMRDA, is poised to become a hub for commercial and residential complexes, along with educational institutions. Covering 10 villages in Kalyan taluka and spanning 1,089 hectares, it is set to host major township projects.
Furthermore, MMRDA has ambitious plans for three growth centres with a specific focus on industrial development in Angaon, Sape, and Amba, all located in Thane. These centres are expected to serve as catalysts for economic growth in their respective microregions, enhancing employment opportunities and connectivity. They are poised to make significant contributions to industrial development, particularly in the manufacturing sector.
Sanjay Mukherjee, the MMRDA commissioner, shared his projections, stating that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is expected to contribute a staggering $350 billion to the Indian economy by 2028.
