The Maharashtra government is taking steps to provide relief to those affected by the tragic landslide that occurred in the state in July 2021. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has announced plans to construct 231 earthquake-resistant independent houses for the victims of the disaster, which claimed the lives of over 80 people. These 2-bedroom homes, measuring approximately 600 square feet, are being built in the Taliye village in Raigad district and are being constructed to provide a safe and secure living environment for the affected individuals.
The cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 77 crore, with each house costing Rs 20 lakh, and will be fully funded by MHADA. The government agency is working to ensure that possession of 66 houses is given by April 2023, with the remaining houses being given in phases. Each home will be built on a 3,000 square foot plot and will come equipped with essential amenities such as a water tank and solar power facilities. The local authorities will also be responsible for providing basic civic services such as roads, streetlights, drainage, and sewage systems.
The homes being built are being constructed using precast panels, which provide a faster and more efficient construction process, and will have a defect liability period of five years. This means that any defects in the construction of the homes will be repaired by MHADA for a period of five years after the completion of the project. The homes are being located in a remote, hilly area for safety reasons, but are conveniently located about an hour from the popular tourist destinations of Mahabaleshwar and two hours from Alibaug.
