In response to a recent discrimination complaint, the Maharashtra state government is taking decisive steps to establish a comprehensive set of regulations governing the rental of premises within buildings. The announcement was made by the state's Woman and Child Development Minister, Aditi Tatkare, during a press conference held on Saturday.
The move comes after a 35-year-old woman lodged a formal complaint with the police, alleging that she was denied the opportunity to rent office space in a building due to her Marathi-speaking background. The incident in question occurred at the Shiv Sadan building, located in the eastern suburb of Mulund, within the greater Mumbai area.
The local police acted swiftly, registering a case against an 80-year-old man and his son, both of whom stand accused of wrongfully restraining the woman, causing her harm, and intentionally insulting her with the intent to provoke a breach of peace. Following their arrest, the accused were presented before a court and subsequently released on bail.
In a demonstration of the government's commitment to addressing the issue, Minister Aditi Tatkare personally visited the complainant woman at her residence, assuring her that strict action would be taken against the individuals responsible for the discriminatory treatment she endured.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Tatkare expressed her disapproval of the discrimination incident, deeming it both unfortunate and condemnable to deny premises to someone based on their Marathi-speaking identity. She emphasized that such behavior has no place in society.
The incident has garnered the attention of the Women's Commission, which has issued a stern response to the matter. Moreover, the state government has taken a firm stance on the issue, asserting its intent to create a comprehensive set of regulations governing the rental of premises to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
The move towards establishing clear rental rules is seen as a positive step in combating discrimination and ensuring equal access to premises for all residents of Maharashtra. The government's commitment to addressing the issue highlights the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of individuals in the state.
