Maharashtra Government to construct 3.75 lakh homes in two years

According to the updated deadline established by the Centre, the Maharashtra State Government is set to construct 3.75 lakh homes throughout Maharashtra under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) by December 2024.

These 3.75 lakh units are a component of the state's 15.82 lakh sanctioned units from 2015, of which 6.93 lakh, or 44%, have been finished. In an effort to mitigate the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Centre shifted the original completion date for the 2015 objective from 2022 to 2024.

In an interview captured by ET Realty, a senior official of the state housing department confirmed the information by saying, "In addition to the 6.93 lakh housing units that were finished up till December of last year, 2.49 lakh homes are currently being constructed in various phases. 1.25 lakh new homes were approved under the programme in March, and work is still being carried on."

The PMAY has been given R 79,000 crore under the Union Budget 2023–24. According to the official, "This additional budgetary allocation will help complete the building of the housing units more swiftly." In addition, the Centre has instructed the states to assess the PMAY-sanctioned housing proposals that were approved prior to December 2020, which is before the pandemic. "Before December 2020, almost 2.50 lakh homes were approved under PMAY. They will be examined in order to justify the target." The official added that these projects were delayed by the pandemics and demanded a review which is expected to be conducted shortly. The projects whose implementation is unachievable owing to the pandemic-induced delay would be cancelled after the review.

According to real estate professionals, the 2011 Socioeconomic and Caste Census provided the information required in the housing for all initiative. Studies have revealed that the lack of urban housing is only getting bleaker, but there are no current statistics that can be trusted because the census has not yet been conducted. According to the PMAY-U website, 61.2 lakh of the country's sanctioned target of 1.25 million homes have been finished as of January 2023.
