Nagpur Municipal Corporation attaches 800 plots over tax defaults

In a drastic step to caution property tax defaulters, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has attached 794 properties, all of which are open plots. The total amount owed to the body is said to be approximately Rs 55 crore. The plot owners have been warned that if they do not pay the NMC tax within the next 21 days, all open plots will be put up for auction.

Only six of the ten zones—Laxmi Nagar, Dharampeth, Hanuman Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Satranjipura, and Ashi Nagar—have taken steps to pursue open plot owners for outstanding property taxes. The Gandhibagh, Lakadganj, and Mangalwari zones' assistant municipal commissioners have received warnings for failing to take punitive action against tax defaulters. According to sources, there are no defaulting open plot owners in the Dhantoli zone.

According to the data collected from the tax office, the city has about 81,558 open plots, the owners of which have failed to pay a staggering Rs 306 crore in property tax. Over 88,000 owners of open plots were discovered by NMC's property tax department for the fiscal year 2022–2023, who appear to have a history of property tax defaults.

Representatives of the civic body have confirmed that they have begun the process of revising the property tax of the plot owners. As many as 6,300 property owners have paid their outstanding debts totalling Rs 5 crore after the city government started acting by taking possession of their properties. Around 2,600 open plot owners have objected to the civic body's levying sewerage and other taxes during the warrant action because their areas lack sewer pipes, water connections, etc.
