The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has been on a mission to identify and demolish illegal structures in the region. Over the course of nine months, they have successfully pinpointed 1,145 illegal structures and have already demolished 56 of them. This proactive approach to tackling unauthorized constructions in the Pune Metropolitan Region demonstrates the authority's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the urban landscape.
Despite the initial success, the demolition drive has faced some temporary setbacks due to the monsoon season. However, PMRDA officials have reassured the public that they plan to intensify their efforts over the next three months. The monsoon, with its heavy rains and adverse weather conditions, can pose challenges to demolition operations, but the commitment to eradicating illegal structures remains unwavering.
One of the key tools in identifying these unauthorized structures has been the use of drones. Drones have proven to be invaluable in locating structures that have been surreptitiously constructed on vacant government lands. Monica Singh, the head of PMRDA's illegal construction demolition department, highlighted the effectiveness of drones in this endeavour. With their aerial perspective, drones provide a bird's-eye view that aids in the identification and subsequent removal of these illegal constructions.
This is not a new initiative for PMRDA. Since 2015, they have been actively identifying illegal structures in the region. In that time frame, they have identified a staggering 9,349 illegal structures. To address this issue, they have issued 1,920 notices and successfully razed 324 of these unauthorized buildings. This sustained effort over several years underscores the seriousness with which PMRDA takes the matter of illegal constructions.
Illegal plotting has become increasingly rampant in the Pune Metropolitan Region, prompting the authorities to take stringent actions. To deter potential violators and maintain the rule of law, FIRs (First Information Reports) have been registered against those involved in illegal plotting. As of now, approximately 100 FIRs have been filed, and there are plans to initiate 76 more in connection with illegal plotting. This legal action serves as a stern warning to those who engage in unlawful land development activities.
The Pune Metropolitan Region is vast, covering an expansive area of 6,000 square kilometres. To effectively combat illegal construction, regular drives are being conducted to inspect and monitor structures throughout the region. Coordination among various departments responsible for granting construction permissions has been identified as a crucial component in maintaining vigilance against illegal constructions. Establishing a systematic approach to keep tabs on unauthorized developments can greatly enhance the authority's ability to combat this ongoing challenge effectively.
In conclusion, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority's dedication to eradicating illegal structures is evident through their consistent efforts and innovative approaches. Despite the temporary slowdown during the monsoon, they are poised to intensify their demolition drive in the coming months. With the use of drones, legal actions like FIRs against violators, and interdepartmental coordination, PMRDA is determined to preserve the region's urban landscape and uphold the rule of law in the face of rampant illegal plotting and construction.
