EV charging infrastructure in Mumbai's residential areas sees remarkable growth

Over the past year, Mumbai has witnessed a remarkable surge in the number of private charging points for electric vehicles (EVs) in residential areas, marking a 328% increase, according to the latest data. Approximately 2,140 private charging points have been installed, including 1,200 chargers within housing societies in the Adani Electricity distribution area, 740 personal home chargers in Tata Power supply regions, and around 200 charging points in BEST and MSEDCL distribution areas. This significant growth reflects the increasing adoption of EVs and the importance of convenient charging infrastructure.
Tata Power, a major player in the EV charging infrastructure, highlighted its partnership with prominent builders in Mumbai and plans for further expansion. Adani Electricity, another significant player in the market, intends to install a total of 8,500 EV charging stations in the suburbs. Moreover, Adani Electricity operates as the preferred EV charging partner for BEST buses and boasts a rooftop solar panel connected to EV charging for select cars in a western suburb housing society.
The BEST power supply wing clarified that consumers are responsible for installing EV charging infrastructure in parking lots. BEST provides electric supply at approved rates through consumers' meters upon receiving applications.
The surge in private charging points reflects the increasing popularity of electric vehicles in Mumbai and the broader push toward sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions. Convenient access to charging infrastructure is a pivotal factor in encouraging more individuals to make the transition to electric vehicles.
This trend is in line with global efforts to promote electric mobility and reduce emissions from traditional combustion engine vehicles. With the expansion of charging infrastructure in residential areas, Mumbai is taking significant steps toward a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future.
