Chennai Airport initiates T3 Terminal demolition for major modernization project

Chennai Airport's T3 terminal is going to be torn down in the next month to make way for the new integrated terminal as part of a big modernization project costing Rs 2,467 crore. Currently, the contracted team has started taking apart all the electrical stuff inside T3. The plan is to start knocking down the building next month and it's expected to take 2-3 months to finish. After that, they'll start building the new integrated terminal early next year.
The whole Phase 2 project was carefully planned to happen in different stages, covering a huge area of 2,20,972 square meters. After its completion in 2025, there will be an international terminal in the middle, with two domestic terminals on either side.
The first part of the new integrated terminal, which is 1,36,295 square meters big, opened in April. International flights started using it in July. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) was getting ready to build the rest of the new terminal when they suddenly decided to start tearing down T3. Once the new integrated terminal is completely finished in the next two years, Chennai Airport will be able to handle a whopping 35 million passengers each year, which is double the current capacity of 17 million passengers.
