The Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia is poised to become the world's tallest building upon its completion, surpassing even the towering Burj Khalifa by an impressive 172 meters. Soaring to a height of 1,000 meters and spanning a remarkable 1.5 kilometres, this architectural marvel will undoubtedly serve as Saudi Arabia's crowning jewel, showcasing the ingenuity and technological prowess of this desert land. The estimated total cost of this ambitious project is around $1.2 billion USD, a testament to the grandeur it aspires to achieve.
Renowned Chicago-based architects Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill have dedicated their expertise to this masterpiece that promises to breathe new life into the heart of the city. Inspired by the fronds of native desert flowers, the tower's design concept pays homage to its arid surroundings. Within its towering structure, the Jeddah Tower will house a Four Seasons hotel, luxurious apartments, office spaces, opulent condominiums, and the world's highest observatory, providing unparalleled views of the Red Sea.
One notable environmental advantage of this colossal edifice is its innovative design, strategically minimizing the wind forces generated by its staggering height. Boasting a staggering 59 elevators and 12 escalators, this architectural wonder is set to be christened the "Kingdom Tower," a fitting name for a structure that seems to pierce the very clouds above.
The journey to bring this monumental project to fruition has seen its share of partnerships and changes. Initially initiated in 2010 as a collaboration between the German firm Bauer and the Saudi Binladin Group, the latter eventually withdrew from the venture. Subsequently, a Lebanese company, Dar al Handasah, joined as an engineering consultant to steer the tower's construction forward. Following the completion of the foundation, the Jeddah Economic City issued a tender for contractors to vie for the honour of completing this remarkable tower.
As of now, the tower's construction has reached the 50th level out of a planned 157. The distinctive three-petal footprint optimizes residential space within the tower, while the tapering wings employ an aerodynamic design to mitigate wind speeds. The tower's elevators will whisk passengers to heights of up to ten meters per second, culminating in the world's highest observatory at level 157, which will be open to the public.
After nearly a decade of anticipation, construction on the Jeddah Tower is set to resume. Once completed, it will not only stand as Saudi Arabia's tallest building, surpassing the Burj Khalifa, but also become a source of immense national pride. Its architectural splendour, technological advancements, and awe-inspiring structure are eagerly anticipated by people around the world. The Kingdom Tower is poised to redefine the skyline and capture the imagination of all who behold it.
