GE Healthcare expands manufacturing in India through joint venture with Wipro

GE Healthcare, the renowned medical technology giant from the USA, is embarking on a significant expansion of its manufacturing operations in India through a strategic joint venture with Wipro, a prominent Indian conglomerate. This joint venture, operating under the name "GE Wipro," is a pivotal participant in the global medical technology and digital solutions landscape. It operates within the framework of the government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, aimed at promoting the domestic production of medical devices in India.

The state-of-the-art facility will specialize in the production of an array of critical medical equipment, including CT machines, Cath Lab equipment, Ultrasound scanners, ECG machines, ventilators, and patient monitoring solutions. This endeavour is poised to strengthen the healthcare ecosystem in India, addressing both local and global health challenges. Notably, it aligns with the objectives of the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" scheme, fostering self-reliance in India by facilitating the domestic manufacture of medical devices while simultaneously creating employment opportunities.

Underpinning its commitment to the "Make In India" initiative, GE Healthcare intends to manufacture 80% of the medical devices locally. The company is the preeminent player in South Asia, focusing on healthcare challenges such as reducing maternal and infant mortality, early cancer detection, and combating heart diseases. Leveraging intelligent devices, GE Healthcare enables faster decision-making to enhance patient outcomes, while Wipro, a leading multinational corporation, adds its technological prowess to the partnership.

This collaboration between two industry titans has elevated the healthcare sector to new heights, promising to improve patient well-being not just in India but across the globe. Their shared vision is to create a healthier future and a world where healthcare knows no boundaries. This move is set to augment India's manufacturing capabilities, making healthcare solutions more affordable and accessible, while also streamlining delivery and response times, and reducing import duties for the Indian healthcare industry.

The manufacturing facility, established in Bangalore since 1991, has already produced an impressive 200,000 units of cutting-edge medical technology, enhancing India's standing in the global healthcare arena. India faces a dual challenge of healthcare disparities, with rural areas lacking adequate devices and facilities, while urban centres enjoy better healthcare access. With GE Wipro's commitment to producing a comprehensive range of healthcare devices, these disparities and challenges can be effectively addressed.

Notably, the PLI scheme has approved an investment of Rs. 1,206 crore, of which Rs. 714 crore has already been realized. Fourteen projects, focusing on the domestic production of 37 high-end medical devices, have been initiated, poised to revolutionize healthcare not only in India but also on the global stage.
