Kolkata Municipal Corporation's comprehensive road repair initiative underway

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has embarked on an extensive road repair initiative to address the deteriorating conditions of several key roadways in the city. Commencing this effort, the first phase focuses on revitalizing road sections in central Kolkata, including prominent areas such as S N Banerjee Road, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, and Bowbazar Street, among others.

In addition to targeting major thoroughfares for repair, the KMC roads department has set its sights on roads adjacent to tram tracks. This decision stems from concerns about the safety of motorists and bikers, primarily due to the presence of tram tracks that have been left unused since tram services were suspended. Mayor Firhad Hakim directed roads department officials to closely monitor road sections that have become hazardous for commuters. These areas include Belgachhia, Hazra Road, Diamond Harbour Road, and Rabindra Sarani, where accidents have occurred as a result of the abandoned tram tracks.

As the road repair drive progresses, the next phase will encompass roads in various parts of Kolkata, extending to both the northern and southern regions of the city. Notable areas in the upcoming phase include Cossipore, Sinthi, Dum Dum in the northern sector, and Alipore, Mominpore, and DH Road in the southern region. According to a KMC roads department official, the forthcoming phase will also involve addressing several stretches of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Road in Tollygunge and Mahatma Gandhi Road in Haridevpur, with operations scheduled to commence on Monday.

Furthermore, stretches of Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road, Asutosh Mukherjee Road, and Syed Amir Ali Avenue near Park Circus seven-point have been identified as needing immediate repair due to the development of potholes, attributed to incessant rains and road excavation activities, as mentioned by a KMC roads department official.

Expanding its scope, the KMC roads department has outlined plans to conduct repair work on select roads situated in the Central Business District. These areas include Netaji Subhas Road, KK Tagore Street, and Strand Road, with an emphasis on expediting the repair process.

In essence, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has embarked on a comprehensive road repair initiative that aims to revitalize and enhance various road sections across the city. This multifaceted effort includes central Kolkata roads, areas near tram tracks, northern and southern regions, and the Central Business District. The objective is to improve road conditions, ensure safety for commuters, and address the challenges posed by abandoned tram tracks and inclement weather.
