The Chennai Corporation has taken action against some construction contractors for not ensuring safety measures while working on stormwater drains. There were complaints about open pits and unsafe conditions. To address this, the corporation has set up special teams in different zones to make sure that safety barriers are properly installed. During a recent inspection, the corporation fined five contractors for not properly securing their work sites. These contractors are: VS Constructions, Sasi Construction, Vijay Gowtham Engineering Works, Pearl Engineering, and Mars Construction. Each of them was fined Rs 20,000.
The corporation has also set certain rules for contractors working on storm drain projects. If contractors fail to put up safety barriers, the corporation will do it and deduct the costs from their payments. They aim to finish the pending work by September 30, with a focus on completing the missing links. Activists feel the fines imposed are too small and that the corporation should go further by blacklisting contractors who repeatedly violate the rules.
The corporation initially planned to finish the work by September 15 but is now giving extensions to contractors. According to official records, the corporation has completed 786.13 kilometres of storm drain work, costing Rs 1,991 crore. They are currently working on minor repairs for 1,501 kilometres, with a budget of Rs 27.46 crore. They have also cleaned 59,473 out of 70,304 silt catch pits and rainwater harvesting structures.
