With 30% property tax revenue sourced, Gurugram aims for Rs 500 crore

The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has been on a revenue-raising spree, amassing an impressive sum of Rs 150 crore in property taxes since April 1st this year, accomplishing a commendable 30% of its annual target. In an ambitious pursuit, the civic body has set its sights on a formidable goal, aiming to rake in a substantial Rs 500 crore in property tax revenue for the upcoming fiscal year 2023–24. In a recent review meeting, MCG Commissioner PC Meena directed top officials to enhance property tax revenues and maximize advertising income. The mandate aims to boost the municipal corporation's financial performance.

While the corporation had initially budgeted for a property tax income of Rs 250 crore, a directive from the Department of Urban Local Bodies (ULB) raised the bar to a lofty Rs 500 crore. During this meeting, Meena emphasized the vital importance of promptly addressing complaints tied to property tax data received through the ULB portal, with a strict directive to ensure that the number of unresolved cases remains under 500 at all times. The commissioner underscored the need to enlighten residents about the self-certification process for property tax data, along with a call for residents to settle their tax dues by September 30 to seize a generous 15% discount.

In addition to these financial incentives, Meena assigned a crucial role to MCG joint commissioners—namely, vigilant oversight of the distribution of tax assessment notices—and urged officials to accelerate the resolution of property tax-related grievances. Recognizing the critical nature of addressing streetlight complaints, Meena directed officials to ensure that residents file these complaints through the MCG's toll-free number. The termination of the streetlight contract and maintenance services by concessionaire Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), arising from alleged non-payment of dues totalling Rs 30 crore, heightens the urgency of this matter.

Furthermore, Meena urged officials to initiate repairs for roads under MCG jurisdiction, specifically those with widths of 18 and 24 meters. As part of a proactive approach, the MCG has unveiled plans for a special campaign spanning September 18th to September 24th, aiming to replace damaged manhole covers with brand-new ones. In a resolute stance, the commissioner highlighted the paramount significance of addressing complaints received through diverse social media platforms, accompanied by a stern ultimatum to MCG officials. His unequivocal message conveyed that any lapses in the timely resolution of these complaints would result in stringent disciplinary action.

These directives and initiatives mirror the MCG's unwavering commitment to augmenting its revenue streams, bolstering infrastructure, and ensuring the expeditious resolution of public concerns. It stands as a testament to the corporation's dedication to achieving financial excellence and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. These concerted efforts underscore MCG's commitment to bolstering its fiscal health and enhancing services for residents.
