Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation targets unregistered PG facilities for tax compliance

The twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad, renowned for their prestigious educational institutions and coaching centres, have seen a surge in the number of paying guest (PG) facilities. This growth is attributed to the influx of students who choose these cities for their academic pursuits. However, with growth comes challenges. A significant number of these PG facilities operate without the necessary permissions from the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) and evade taxes.

In light of this, the HDMC has shifted its focus to these PG accommodations, particularly in areas like Vidyanagar in Hubballi. Many homeowners, capitalizing on the demand, have transformed their residential properties into commercial PG facilities without obtaining the required permissions or paying the due taxes. Dharwad mirrors this trend, with many PG centres operating outside the purview of government regulations.

The issue of these unauthorized PG facilities was highlighted in a recent HDMC general body meeting. Several corporators emphasized the need for action against these illegal establishments, not only to ensure compliance but also as a means to boost the HDMC's revenue.

In response, HDMC Commissioner Ishwar Ullagaddi has announced the formation of a special task force. This team is tasked with conducting a comprehensive ward-wise survey of all PG facilities in the twin cities. The objective is to ascertain the total number of PG centres, their registration status, and whether they have the necessary permissions from civic authorities. All 12 zonal assistant commissioners have been directed to submit their findings within a fortnight.

Post-survey, the special task force, which includes officials from the revenue and other HDMC departments, will take appropriate action against defaulters. Ullagaddi believes that ensuring compliance from these PG facilities can significantly augment the HDMC's revenue.

In conclusion, The HDMC's proactive approach towards regulating PG facilities underscores the importance of tax compliance and adherence to civic norms. As the twin cities continue to grow as educational hubs, ensuring that all establishments operate within the legal framework becomes paramount for sustainable development.
