Maharashtra government plans to develop Gilbert Hill in Mumbai into a tourist attraction

Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the guardian minister of Mumbai's suburbs, has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform Gilbert Hill in Andheri (West), a 200-feet monolith column of black basalt rock, into a tourist attraction comparable to Dubai's Burj Khalifa. This endeavour is part of the Maharashtra government's proposal to enhance the area's appeal. The project aims to address current issues of landslides and slum encroachments on the hill. Lodha shared these plans during the inauguration of the newly constructed Shivaji Maharaj swimming pool at Gilbert Hill, which marks the tenth public pool in Mumbai.

Gilbert Hill, designated as a grade II heritage structure, has a fascinating geological history, dating back approximately 66 million years when it formed from molten lava. However, its present condition is marred by landslides, particularly at the cliff and base, and encroachments by slum-dwellers.

Lodha drew a parallel between Gilbert Hill and the iconic Burj Khalifa in Dubai, highlighting the latter's status as a global tourist magnet. He emphasized that the development of Gilbert Hill into a tourist destination could follow a similar trajectory.

The proposal to make Gilbert Hill a prominent tourist attraction is the result of discussions and site inspections conducted by local civic authorities and historians in December 2020. The goal is to overhaul the entire area within the next year. One of the key additions will be an elevator constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD) to facilitate pilgrims visiting the temple situated atop the hill.

Additionally, three new swimming pools are scheduled to open for the people of Mumbai in Worli, Vikhroli, and Andheri (East). The Shivaji Maharaj swimming pool, which was inaugurated alongside this announcement, will offer an annual membership priced at Rs 8,410 for adults, with a 25 percent discount for women. Students under the age of 15 can obtain membership for Rs 4,370. The pool aims to cater to 2,750 members annually.

The transformation of Gilbert Hill into a tourist hotspot holds significant promise for Mumbai's tourism sector, offering both locals and visitors an opportunity to explore this geological marvel while enjoying modern amenities like swimming pools. With plans in motion, the Maharashtra government hopes to realize the full potential of this unique site, making it a landmark attraction akin to the renowned Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
