Trichy Council promotes using construction debris to combat waterlogging

Trichy's Corporation Council has unveiled a proposal to tackle the perennial issue of waterlogging during monsoon season, by utilising construction debris. This eco-friendly initiative aims at filling low-lying areas and vacant sites with the waste material, thereby preventing stagnant water build-up.

Mayor Mu Anbalagan has made an impassioned call to councillors, encouraging them to identify empty plots within their wards. Once identified, the local representatives are expected to liaise with property owners and advise them on implementing this debris-filling measure.

This initiative comes alongside other monsoon preparations. There was a unanimous call from the council members for the acceleration of desilting measures across pivotal drains. A notable mention was the Rettaivaikkal channel that runs through Varaganeri. Assurances were given that not only would desilting take place, but additional fortifications, such as the construction of retaining walls, would be prioritised.

Regarding the unresolved UGD work, the council was keen to have these projects wrapped up as soon as possible. Addressing these concerns, corporation representatives provided timelines, stating that all lingering road work is slated for completion by the end of September. A suggestion was also put forward by Councillor L Rex from ward 39 of installing street name boards while refurbishing the roads, to ensure that the city's infrastructural improvements go hand-in-hand with functional, citizen-friendly amenities.
