Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board restarts work at the Manjalmedu apartment complex in Madurai

The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) has been overseeing the finalization of the Manjalmedu apartment complex situated in Madurai. The previous slums in the Manjalmedu area were demolished to pave the way for the commencement of the apartment complex in October 2020. However, the construction progress was impeded by pandemic-related disruptions and funding challenges.

Spanning across 2.5 acres of land, the complex features individual residences measuring 400 square feet each. The construction cost for each unit is estimated at 11.6 lakhs. The apartment complex, encompassing three stories, comprises a total of 320 houses. The anticipated completion date for the complex is October 23rd.

The State government has committed to subsidizing the project. The subsidy structure entails the State government contributing 9 lakh rupees, the Central government providing 1.6 lakh rupees, and the beneficiary bearing the remaining one lakh rupee cost.

The TNUHDB has also embarked on the construction of another apartment complex in Subramaniyapuram, featuring 396 houses within 1.43 acres, at a cost of 62.7 crore rupees. The Minister for Information Technology laid the foundation stone for this particular project. The units within this complex span an area of 414 square feet and are priced at 15.8 lakh rupees each. The construction timeline for this endeavour is projected to be a year and a half.

The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board TNUHDB has implemented an array of housing initiatives aimed at enhancing the living conditions of low-income families. The overarching goal of the TNUHDB is to uplift the underprivileged population and contribute to the establishment of slum-free urban areas, thereby elevating overall living standards. Additionally, the TNUHDB is actively involved in the construction, maintenance, and allocation of reasonably priced apartments to government employees.
