Residential properties in Chandigarh are facing a significant development as their water connections are on the brink of being disconnected due to defaulting on property tax payments. The Municipal Corporation (MC) of Chandigarh has taken a decisive stance on the matter, sending out approximately 250 notices of impending water disconnection to violators situated across various neighbourhoods.
This stringent action has been made possible through a collaboration between the property tax department and the public health wing of the engineering department. The concerted effort aims to address the issue of property tax defaulting comprehensively. The current focus of disconnection notices has predominantly been on the northern sectors of the city.
The strategy devised by the authorities involves a methodical approach, wherein property owners are being notified in a phased manner. The initial phase targets properties in sectors 2 to 24, with even a few properties in Sector 38 West falling under the purview of the notices. The approach underscores fairness and systematic progression in addressing the issue.
Officials have emphasized that this endeavour is not driven by a punitive motive, but rather a focus on revenue generation for the city's development and infrastructure projects. The property tax defaulters have been granted ample time to settle their outstanding dues. However, in cases where payment remains elusive, the engineering department is authorized to proceed with water connection disconnections without further notice.
A notable aspect of this initiative is the proactive response exhibited by some defaulters who have already taken steps to rectify their situation by depositing the outstanding amounts. While around 25 to 30 defaulters have made payments in response to the notices, a significant portion is yet to comply.
The proactive approach taken by the municipal authorities extends to their willingness to engage with the public. Officials have encouraged those facing difficulties or queries related to the property tax notices to reach out to the MC employees and concerned officials for guidance and assistance. This reflects a collaborative and empathetic stance by the authorities. It's worth noting that the cumulative amount of defaulting property tax payments has exceeded Rs 1 crore, signifying the importance of this revenue stream for the city's ongoing development initiatives.
Reflecting on the timeline of events, during a two-month rebate period that spanned April and May, property owners were incentivized with a 20% rebate on residential properties and a 10% rebate on commercial properties. However, following this period, a stricter stance is being taken towards defaulters. A penalty of 25% of the entire property tax amount awaits those who fail to settle their dues promptly. Subsequently, an additional 12% interest will be levied on the outstanding amount, further emphasizing the significance of adhering to tax obligations.
