Simplifying property verification, Haryana adopts Aadhaar cards for ID authentication

In a move set to bring relief to residents grappling with property identification document discrepancies, the urban local bodies department in Chandigarh has taken a significant step by accepting Aadhaar cards as valid documents for identity verification and e-KYC authentication. The decision, communicated through an official notification on August 10, aims to simplify and expedite the often cumbersome process of property ID corrections.

This transformative measure comes in response to a directive from the Government of India, urging the integration of Aadhaar cards for verifying individuals seeking access to various government schemes. By allowing Aadhaar cards to serve as both identity and authentication documents, the urban local bodies department aims to streamline the process and make it more accessible for residents.

What's particularly noteworthy about this decision is that it alters the landscape of document authentication. Previously, the Parivar Pehchan Patra (PPP) was the primary document used for identity verification. However, with the introduction of Aadhaar cards as an accepted form of authentication, the PPP will now serve as an optional or supplementary means of verification.

Statistics reveal that Chandigarh, like many regions, has around 1 crore registered property IDs across different civic bodies. The correction of these IDs has emerged as a persistent challenge for both residents and the state government. The introduction of Aadhaar cards as a credible means of authentication is expected to mitigate this challenge by simplifying the process and reducing the complexity associated with property ID corrections.

Interestingly, this issue wasn't confined to property owners alone. Even members of the ruling BJP-JJP alliance have been actively highlighting the concerns surrounding property ID corrections. This came to the fore during a recent core committee meeting of the Haryana BJP, where senior leaders emphasized the importance of addressing this issue. They further took the matter up with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, showcasing the gravity of the issue at hand.

Moreover, the integration of Aadhaar cards is poised to prevent another vexing challenge — variations between Aadhaar card details and those on the PPP have led to beneficiaries being removed from various state schemes. This reform seeks to avoid such pitfalls by ensuring greater consistency and accuracy in the authentication process.
