The Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) is diligently crafting an elaborate blueprint for orchestrating tax camps within slum localities, a strategic move poised to initiate tax collection. Preceding this endeavour, the corporation has readied tax forms for the 132 identified localities, housing them at the corporation's premises. Anticipations are high that this collection will infuse the DMC's coffers with a substantial Rs 4 crore. Financial records narrate a compelling story: the fiscal year 2022-2023 witnessed a remarkable Rs 52 crore in the collection, a staggering surge from the mere Rs 16 crore of the preceding year.
The current fiscal year already boasts an impressive collection of Rs 25 crore, with officials foreseeing a seamless surpassing of last year's achievement. A crescendo of payments typically graces the financial year's culmination. Dharmesh Panauli, the DMC tax superintendent, emphasized how digitization significantly aids in streamlining the taxation process, leading to an increase in payments. Notably, a number of previous defaulters, burdened with considerable outstanding dues, have successfully settled their obligations over the past year. Panauli underscored the anticipated heightened revenue collection upon the reinstatement of tax collection from slum localities.
Within this dynamic landscape, the department is engrossed in identifying potential violators who either skirt property tax obligations or withhold vital information to diminish tax liabilities. An acutely proactive stance is embodied in the identification of nine commercial entities, who were promptly notified with a grace period of two weeks to address issues before facing penalties. The quest to uncover violators continues, promising substantial gains from these anomalies. Currently, discrepancies are poised to yield at least Rs 2 crore, with this amount poised to escalate as verification procedures intensify.
In a pioneering stride, the DMC is crafting an unprecedented narrative, erecting tax camps within every slum enclave across the city. While the corporation has previously established camps in select slum areas, this endeavour marks the first of its kind, enveloping over 120 city slums in its ambit. However, tax payments by slum residents don't confer property rights, especially within slum areas predominantly situated along riverbanks and unconventional domains. In these immersive camps, the tax division envisions reaching over 50,000 slum residences, weaving a tapestry of financial inclusion, and orchestrating progress.
In the tapestry of urban governance, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation stands as a beacon of innovation and commitment. Digitization propels its tax collection strategies, showcasing a progressive approach. The Corporation's vigilant stance against defaulters and its efforts to expand tax collection in slum areas underscores its dedication to financial growth. As it navigates new avenues to enhance revenue, the DMC remains an exemplar of efficient administration in its pursuit of a thriving urban landscape.
