Dramatic scenes unfolded in Pali Hill as a prominent builder, Rajan Dhruv of Orbit Ventures, found himself in a tense standoff with law enforcement officials for two hours on Tuesday morning. A joint team from the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and Khar police arrived at his residence to serve a notice related to an alleged cheating case amounting to a staggering Rs 11.76 crore.
The situation escalated as Dhruv, aged 55, barricaded himself within his flat, leading the police to resort to unconventional measures to gain entry. Repeated attempts to ring the doorbell went unanswered, revealing later that the doorbell itself was malfunctioning. In a surprising twist, a local key maker was summoned to unlock the door, finally granting authorities access to the builder's hideout.
It was revealed that Dhruv had sought refuge in a neighbouring flat within the duplex, while his son rested unaware in the bedroom and a domestic helper went about their duties. Upon entering the flat, the police discovered Dhruv's absence from the premises but managed to track him down shortly thereafter. He was served with the official notice and instructed to present himself before the investigating officer.
The backdrop to this incident stems from a legal battle that had been brewing between Dhruv and a 57-year-old woman from Khar. The woman, who is identified as the complainant, lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the directors of Orbit Ventures Developers, including Dhruv. The complaint alleges criminal breach of trust and dishonest inducement of property delivery.
According to law enforcement officials, the complainant and Dhruv shared a prior acquaintance. Dhruv allegedly convinced her to provide him with a substantial sum, purportedly for business purposes. Over time, the complainant handed over a staggering Rs 11.76 crore. However, when she demanded repayment, Dhruv purportedly failed to fulfil his obligation. In an attempt to placate her, he promised her a commercial unit within his BKC project and even issued an allotment letter as proof. Yet, he allegedly reneged on this promise, claiming to have sold the unit to another party.
The EOW, which subsequently took charge of the investigation, shed light on the tangled web of accusations and counter-accusations that have resulted in the current legal entanglement. As the case unfolds, Dhruv faces charges of criminal breach of trust and dishonestly inducing property delivery.
