Kochi's LIFE Housing Project nears completion; launch expected by month-end

Only finishing touches are remaining for the long-awaited LIFE Mission housing project, which is located on property owned by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) near Mundamveli. The project, which has experienced numerous deadline slip-ups, has concluded the work on one of its blocks, and it is predicted that the second block will be finished shortly.

GCDA sources have indicated that the launch of the project is slated for the end of the current month, bringing relief to approximately 80 families residing in P&T Colony. These families are soon to be relocated to their new residences as part of this initiative.

Block 2's construction has been successfully wrapped up, while the formal inauguration will take place once both blocks are fully completed. Block 1 necessitates some final tasks, including flooring, painting, and the installation of window frames and grills.

The Thrissur District Labour Contract Co-operative Society, responsible for the construction, is striving to expedite the remaining work to meet the established deadlines. The official launch ceremony is expected to be graced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, with a date being coordinated at his convenience. The urgency to complete the rehabilitation before the intensification of monsoon rains in P&T Colony, where waterlogging remains a concern, has been emphasized by GCDA authorities.

Comprising two four-storey buildings spread across 70 cents, the project encompasses the construction of 83 flats. Each unit, spanning an area of 375 square feet, features two bedrooms, a living-cum-dining room, a kitchen, and a toilet. The buildings are designed to include essential amenities like a sick room, day care facilities, an administrative room, and a reading room. Additionally, rainwater harvesting tanks, drinking water tanks, and fire safety systems will be integrated into each structure.

The overall project cost amounts to Rs 14.61 crore, averaging around 16 lakh per unit. Financial allocations from various sources contribute to the project's funding. The LIFE Mission has allocated Rs 9.03 crore, supplemented by an additional Rs 1.23 crore from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) scheme of the central government. Furthermore, approximately Rs 4.86 crore has been received under the aegis of the Cochin Smart Mission Ltd.

As the completion of the LIFE Mission housing project draws near, the upcoming launch signifies a significant step forward in providing improved living conditions and essential amenities to the residents of P&T Colony, while showcasing the collaborative efforts of multiple entities involved in the project's funding and execution.
