Kolhapur Civic Body to rehouse Kamgar Chal residents on-site in 270 sqft homes

The dilapidated condition of five buildings in Kamgar Chal has prompted the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) to issue relocation notices to the affected families. However, in an attempt to mitigate the inconvenience, the KMC plans to provide the displaced with new 270 sq ft homes in the same locality, stated additional commissioner Ravikant Adsul.

Concerns over structural integrity prompted the civic body to conduct a thorough structural audit, leading to the decision to evacuate. In a meeting with the local families, Adsul communicated the gravity of the situation, referencing a recent incident where a woman lost her life due to the collapse of a wall in Khasbag Maidan.

He further reassured the residents by stating that the several KMC employees living there will also receive a new 270 square foot dwelling in the freshly constructed buildings. He reaffirmed the civic body’s commitment to prompt construction to minimize disruption. To accelerate the process, KMC has directed Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd (MSEDCL) and the water supply department to discontinue utilities to the threatened Kamgar Chal structures from August 1.

Yet, some residents remain skeptical about the move. A resident, who requested to remain anonymous, raised concerns about the fate of the vacated space, voicing fears about potential commercial exploitation and questioning the true safety of the structures.

In conclusion, while the KMC's plans to rebuild at the same location offer a ray of hope, the civic body must also address the residents' concerns transparently. Their challenge will be to expedite the rebuilding process while ensuring the welfare of the displaced families, maintaining the trust and cooperation that will be crucial in this challenging time.
