AG Enviro Infra Projects and Metro Waste Handling are collaborating to build two waste plants in Mumbai, set to be operational by the end of February 2024. The Bombay Municipal Corporation is actively seeking supervisors to oversee the construction and demolition of these waste plants. The purpose of these plants is to process approximately 1,200 tonnes of waste daily, specifically construction waste, in order to manufacture precast concrete products.
One of the waste plants will be located in Gorai, handling waste from the western suburbs, while the other plant in Shilphata will process waste from the eastern suburbs and the city. The waste will be collected from construction sites and transported to these plants to be converted into precast concrete products. To facilitate this waste collection process, the BMC has introduced the "Debris on Call" facility, ensuring that all construction debris is lifted from sites and disposed of properly, preventing unauthorized dumping in the city.
The two waste plants will process drains and paver blocks, which will then be sold by AG Enviro Infra Projects and Metro Waste Handling, the companies in charge of the plants. The BMC will pay a transportation fee to both plants, with the Gorai plant receiving Rs. 1,415 per tonne and the Shilphata plant receiving Rs. 1,425 per tonne for waste transportation.
Additionally, the BMC may introduce a buy-back policy for the products manufactured by the plants, although this proposal is still in process. The sites for the plants have been finalized, and permissions are currently being obtained. The construction will begin once all the formalities are completed, and the plants are scheduled to be completed by February 2024.
As part of this waste management initiative, the BMC will establish a control room for waste collection and transportation, along with an app and portal for citizens to conveniently dispose of waste. The construction of these plants aims to raise awareness among the public about proper waste disposal and contribute to maintaining a clean and green city.
