The wheels of action are turning within the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) as they take a resolute stand against property owners who have fallen behind on their property tax payments. Swiftly, they will dispatch tax demand notices to the defaulters, coupled with a 1 percent interest charge for their tardiness in settling the property tax by the due date, which was July 15. At the outset, Cantonment Board officials granted a one-month grace period until June 30 for property owners to settle their property tax dues. Yet the response was lacklustre, necessitating an extension of the deadline by an additional fortnight, stretching until July 15.
The exact number of defaulters remains veiled, though insiders hint that out of the 38,000 assesses in the Cantonment, approximately 15,000 have dutifully paid their taxes. The tax wing of SCB, alarmed by sluggish tax collections, has decided to use the power of the Cantonments Act, 2006, to impose penalties on defaulters. Section 102 (1) of the Cantonments Act outlines that if any person on whom a notice of demand has been served under Section 100 does not comply within thirty days from the date of service, they shall be liable to pay an additional one percent interest on the amount due for each complete month from the expiration of the thirty-day period.
With the endorsement of SCB's chief executive officer, D. Madhukar Naik, the tax wing has sprung into action, serving notices to the defaulters with a 1 percent penalty affixed to the outstanding tax amounts. The defaulters have until September 30 to make amends, availing themselves of either the convenient e-Chhavani platform or cash counters at the SCB main office. For those who brazenly disregard the notices, their names shall be unveiled before the discerning gaze of the SCB CEO, who will wield the power to institute further actions.
Embracing this endeavour with a sense of duty, the SCB remains steadfast in upholding the tenets of the Cantonments Act, fostering a just and disciplined tax regime within the region. With resolve and innovation, the SCB forges ahead, ensuring a brighter financial future for the Cantonment and all its stakeholders.
