The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently announced that Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been awarded the contract to construct the much-anticipated elevated Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road. The project aims to enhance connectivity between the western suburbs and the city's outskirts, while also alleviating congestion at Dahisar check naka. The estimated cost for this ambitious infrastructure endeavour is set at Rs 1,959 crore.
The initiative, a joint effort between BMC and Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC), is seen as a crucial step in addressing the growing traffic woes in the region. The project tender was floated in October last year, and after careful consideration of bids, L&T emerged as the lowest bidder, securing the construction rights for the elevated road.
The proposed elevated road, spanning a width of 45 meters, will cover a distance of 5 kilometres. Of this stretch, 1.5 kilometres will fall within BMC limits, while the remaining 3.5 kilometres will be under MBMC's jurisdiction. The road will establish a vital link between the Kandarpada Metro station on Link Road in Dahisar (W) and Uttan Road near Subhash Chandra Bose Ground in Bhayander (W). Presently, commuters traveling between Dahisar and Bhayander have to contend with heavy traffic on the Western Express Highway or rely on overcrowded local trains, making this elevated road a welcome relief.
An official from BMC explained the pressing need for this project, citing the congestion at the sole road connectivity point, Dahisar check naka, and the overcrowded trains. The elevated road is expected to address these issues, providing a more efficient and comfortable means of travel for thousands of commuters.
However, before commencing construction, L&T will have to obtain permissions from various authorities, including the state coastal zone management authority, salt pan commissioner, and the ministry of environment, forest, and climate change. The scope of work also includes executing marine environments, intertidal zones, and creeks, as well as constructing bridges, pavements, underpasses, and interchanges following the alignment proposed by BMC.
In addition to improving connectivity, the project incorporates plans for a multi-modal transport hub with Kandarpada Metro station. It will feature seven-storey mechanized parking lots with bus termini in the basement, offering 550 parking spaces for commuters.
P Velrasu, BMC's additional municipal commissioner, highlighted some essential aspects of the project, emphasizing signal-free multi-level roads, interchanges on both sides to mitigate traffic congestion, and provisions for future integration with the coastal road development plans.
