Construction norm violations lead to traffic risks in Bengaluru

Residents of Bengaluru have voiced growing concerns over a local construction project's blatant disregard for setback norms, leading to hazardous traffic conditions. The project, situated in the ST Bed Layout, was initiated by a builder whose flagrant violation of standard procedures has created a blind curve, contributing to a spike in nearby accidents.

The civic bodies, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), are under fire for their apparent laxity in addressing the illegal construction activities. The situation escalated when the builder began the project without adhering to standard norms, raising significant safety concerns for the local community.

Earlier this week, residents took matters into their own hands, staging a protest at the construction site, demanding a halt to the unsafe work. Rajendra Babu Reddy, president of ST Bed Layout Residents' Welfare Association, expressed their collective stance, "We aren't against the building, but the builder must adhere to building by-laws. The lack of footpath space will cause a permanent problem for motorists if the construction continues without respecting norms."

After a productive meeting with the local MLA and Transport and Muzrai Minister, Ramalinga Reddy, the residents saw a positive shift in their plight. Acting swiftly on the minister's instructions, BBMP executive engineer Ashok Biradar ceased construction activities. While partial progress has been made in dismantling elements of the construction, residents are hopeful for the prompt removal of all obstructive elements.

However, unanswered questions linger about how the project was able to advance this far without proper authorization. Biradar admitted that the builder appears not to have sought the necessary plan approval from the BDA. He stated, "Our primary duty is to ensure that the builder respects the building by-laws. It appears the builder neglected to request BDA's approval for the project."

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the hazards that can arise from disregard for construction norms. It is an urgent call to all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to safety and legal protocols. The prompt response by authorities provides some relief, but the need for systemic improvements to prevent such incidents remains paramount.
