The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Mumbai city police's Economic Offences Wing has been assigned the task of investigating alleged irregularities reported in the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) audit regarding the BMC's (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) expenditures, which amount to a staggering Rs 12,000 crore. On Wednesday, the SIT interrogated developer Alpesh Ajmera for an extensive period of eight hours, in connection with the suspected Dahisar Eksar land scam. The SIT is currently focusing on three preliminary inquiries to thoroughly examine different aspects of the alleged irregularities. The first inquiry revolves around a purported Rs 206 crore scam related to the Dahisar Eksar land acquisition. It is alleged that the land, which was initially purchased by Ajmera from an individual for a relatively modest sum of Rs 2.97 crore in 2011, was swiftly acquired by the BMC for a significant amount of Rs 54 crore within a mere three months. Over the course of the next nine years, the value of the land further escalated, reaching a staggering Rs 349 crore. The second inquiry by the SIT pertains to an alleged misappropriation of funds amounting to Rs 200 crore within various BMC departments. The details of this misappropriation are yet to be fully disclosed, but it raises concerns about the financial management and transparency within the municipal corporation. The third investigation being conducted by the SIT delves into 60 different projects worth a cumulative Rs 5,000 crore that were executed across five BMC departments. This investigation aims to shed light on potential irregularities, conflicts of interest, or possible corruption in the execution of these projects. The alleged irregularities in the BMC's expenditures have raised serious questions about the governance and financial management of the civic body. If proven true, such malpractices could not only lead to a loss of public funds but also erode the trust of citizens in the government institutions responsible for their well-being.
