Residents of Gurugram's Sushant Lok & Sector 40 stage a protest against shoddy maintenance

Residents of Sushant Lok 1 in Gurugram staged a protest on Sunday to express their dissatisfaction with the lack of basic amenities in their locality. The protest, directed at multiple government agencies including MCG, GMDA, DHBVN, and DTCP, saw residents take to the streets, demanding action.

The protesters gathered at Rajpath Marg, displaying banners and chanting slogans, and proceeded to form a human chain. They then marched towards the Millenium City metro station, causing disruptions in traffic flow. The demonstration aimed to draw attention to issues such as dilapidated roads, inadequate sewage and drainage systems.

Chanting slogans like "suvidha nahi toh tax nahi" (no facilities, no taxes) and "kaam karo yaa kursi chhodo" (do your job or step down), the residents voiced their frustration. They also vowed to withhold payment of property tax, electricity bills, and sewage charges until their concerns were addressed.

Vishnu Khanna, the president of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) in Sushant Lok 1, highlighted problems such as unregulated commercial activities and encroachment in residential areas. Despite multiple complaints, the DTCP had allegedly failed to take any action. The GMDA was accused of neglecting the maintenance of green belts and fences to prevent encroachments. Moreover, the DHBVN's investment in developing a smart city was criticized, as power supply disruptions during rainfall had a cascading effect on water supply.

RWA General Secretary Deepak Verma declared that if conditions did not improve, residents would stop paying bills and taxes to the local corporation. Meanwhile, in Sector 40, residents protested against the MCG, demanding desilting of drains, installation of rainwater harvesting systems, repair of lights, park renovations, and construction of a water boosting station. Bhupender Yadav, the RWA president of the sector, warned of intensified protests if no action was taken.

Naresh Kumar, the joint commissioner of MCG, acknowledged the infrastructure deficiencies in Sushant Lok 1, emphasizing that the responsibility for addressing them rested with the developer. He assured that development work in Sushant Lok 1 was underway, while other projects were in the tendering process or undergoing cost estimation. Regarding Sector 40, Kumar explained that the infrastructure there was old, and time was required to address the issues, urging residents to be patient and understanding.
