Urban planning reforms to transform cities into investment hotspots: Home Minister

The implementation of urban planning reforms is driving cities in India to become attractive destinations for investments, according to Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. In his address at the National Urban Planning Conclave held in New Delhi, Minister Puri emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive policy ecosystem to ensure improved access to services, enhanced operational efficiencies, and area-based planning.

The two-day conclave, organized by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, witnessed a series of presentations featuring key speakers, including chief town planners from various states. Renowned academicians in the field of urban planning moderated technical sessions on topics such as transit-oriented development, transferable development rights, local area plans, affordable housing, environmentally sustainable development, and the future plans for Delhi.

Minister Puri highlighted the remarkable progress made by various housing and urban affairs missions, stating that they have significantly enhanced the quality of life in cities. He cited achievements such as universal access to water and sanitation, the development of sustainable transportation infrastructure, and efforts to address affordable housing needs.

Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Kaushal Kishore, expressed confidence in the readiness of cities to implement reforms on various crucial parameters through knowledge sharing and experience gained from the conclave. Meanwhile, HUA Secretary Manoj Joshi emphasized the significance of transit-oriented development, transportation and road networks, and other essential frameworks for effective township planning.

The event also featured an exhibition where states, union territories, and urban planning academic institutions showcased their projects undertaken in different cities. This exhibition served as a platform to highlight the progress and innovations in urban planning across the country.

With urban planning reforms driving positive changes and creating investment opportunities, India's cities are poised to attract more investments and enhance their overall development. The National Urban Planning Conclave is a catalyst for knowledge exchange and collaboration among stakeholders, which could lead to the foundation for a sustainable and prosperous urban future in the country.
