Ahmedabad to auction five properties with pending tax

The auction block awaits the imminent sale of five properties located in the upscale areas of Law Garden and Swastik Society as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) takes decisive action to recover outstanding property tax dues. The dues range from Rs 10.43 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, and the auction is slated for the final week of July. Jainik Vakil, the chairman of the AMC revenue committee, revealed that in response to the property owners' persistent non-compliance, the AMC has resolved to auction these properties. Despite receiving notices and warnings regarding the impending auction, they have failed to fulfil their obligations.

Elaborating further, Vakil explained that once the properties are auctioned, the AMC will recover the outstanding tax dues and return the surplus amount to the original owners. For instance, the reserve price for a property in the Swastik area is Rs 1.89 crore, while the actual dues owed by the owner amount to Rs 23.32 lakh. Should the property fetch Rs 1.90 crore at auction, the AMC will recoup Rs 23.32 lakh and reimburse the original owner with the remaining Rs 1.67 crore. Among the property owners, Sonali Shah and Soi Beauty Parlour in Law Garden face pending tax dues of Rs 50.44 lakhs and Rs 10.43 lakhs, respectively. Additionally, three property owners in Swastik Society owe Rs 63.62 lakhs in total.

The five properties are valued at approximately Rs 4.67 crore in total, and the defaulters collectively owe the AMC approximately Rs 1.24 crore in taxes. Once the properties are auctioned, the buyers will settle the dues owed to the AMC, ensuring the proper payment of outstanding amounts. Vakil emphasized that the auction of these five properties is scheduled for the final week of July, with prospective bidders required to present their Aadhaar cards as proof of participation. In the event of no bidders, the AMC will gain possession of the properties for a nominal sum of Re 1. Highlighting the AMC's commitment to tax recovery, Vakil stated that since April, the AMC has successfully collected Rs 842 crore in taxes, including property tax, professional tax, and vehicle tax, surpassing last year's figures by a significant margin of Rs 220 crore.
