Lucknow collects Rs 91 crore CESS to safeguard construction worker social security

In a significant development, the labour department of Lucknow has successfully collected a total of Rs 91.8 crore cess from approximately 337 commercial establishments in the district during the first quarter of the 2023-24 financial year. This substantial amount will now be utilized to extend various social security schemes to around 3.85 lakh workers who are registered with the labour welfare board.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the labour department emphasized the importance of these funds in providing comprehensive safety, health, and welfare measures to the registered workers. The department highlighted that the collected amount would be disbursed for eight social security schemes specifically designed to cater to the needs of the workers and address incidental matters concerning their well-being.

To ensure maximum coverage and outreach, District Magistrate Surya Pal Gangwar called for a district-level Shram Bandhu meeting last week. During the meeting, Gangwar urged the labour department to conduct a thorough study of different areas in order to identify all eligible workers who have previously remained outside the purview of the Labour Welfare Board.

Gangwar further directed the department to establish dedicated camps at various labour chowks and other strategic locations to raise awareness about the schemes available to the workers. Collaborating with labour unions was also encouraged to enhance coordination and extend the benefits of the schemes to a larger population.

Assistant Labour Commissioner Shipra Chaturvedi, while commenting on the district administration's directions, highlighted the department's ongoing study of various labour chowks. She explained that this study aimed not only to increase the scheme's coverage but also to gather comprehensive data on the workers' profiles. Such data would enable the identification of areas where workers require assistance from the Labour Welfare Board.

The labour department's efforts to collect the cess and their commitment to extending social security schemes is a step in the right direction to improving the lives of registered workers. As the funds are disbursed and the schemes are implemented, it is expected that a significant positive impact will be felt by the workers in terms of their safety, health, and overall welfare.
