800+ exempted from Chandigarh property tax this fiscal year

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has taken a significant step by exempting approximately 850 owners of residential properties in the city from paying property tax for the current financial year, starting in April. This move aims to provide relief to certain categories of property owners who fall within three specific groups: widows, disabled individuals, and ex-servicemen.

The approval for the exemption notification was first obtained from the MC general house, and later it received the official endorsement of the Chandigarh administration, ensuring the successful implementation of this exemption provision. The administration issued a specific notification outlining the exemption for the aforementioned categories. It is important to note that the list of beneficiaries is subject to change on an annual basis, with the selection process based on applications for exemption benefits.

Applicants are actively involved in the process of availing themselves of property tax exemption by submitting their own documents and valid identity proofs, which competent authorities thoroughly review. Following the established procedures and guidelines, the authority grants the exemption accordingly. The widow category requires proof of property ownership, while the disabled category mandates a disability certificate issued by the government authority, along with the ownership certificates. Ex-servicemen, on the other hand, must provide both their ownership certificate and valid identity proof as ex-servicemen.

In cases where the ownership of properties is not entirely registered in the names of the beneficiaries, exemption benefits are calculated based on the percentage of property ownership that is registered in their names. The issue of property tax exemption and the selection of beneficiaries have been recurring topics of discussion in the monthly general house meetings of the MC. Councillors proposed various categories during the deliberations, but after careful consideration, the Chandigarh administration finalized and officially notified the three aforementioned categories—widows, disabled individuals, and ex-servicemen.

This proactive measure by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation demonstrates its commitment to providing support and relief to deserving individuals within the community, ensuring fairness and equity in the taxation system.
