Nagpur Municipal Body records 23 percent property tax collection within three months

In a remarkable display of tax compliance, the property owners of the city have demonstrated an unprecedented commitment by collectively contributing an impressive amount of Rs 69.29 crore within a mere three months in the fiscal year 2023–24. Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Revenue) Milind Meshram elaborated on this achievement, stating that a notable 47,757 property owners seized the opportunity to avail of a 5 percent discount by opting for online payment. The property tax department has set an ambitious target of Rs 300 crore for the entire year, reflecting their commitment to fiscal objectives.

The city boasts a substantial property landscape, comprising an extensive range of properties including residential, industrial, non-residential, mixed-use, and vacant land. To encourage early payment, the civic body has introduced rebate schemes, offering 10 percent and 5 percent discounts to those settling their taxes before June 30 and December 31, respectively. Please note that the state government imposes the education cess and employment guarantee scheme cess, and the rebate applies to the total property tax excluding these cess charges.

In addition to the 10 percent rebate on property tax for early payment before June 30, this year the NMC introduced an additional 5 percent incentive for those who opted for online payments. Former municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B. introduced a scheme that received a positive response from 47,757 taxpayers who opted for online payment. This resulted in a substantial tax collection of Rs 27.18 crore, accompanied by a generous rebate of Rs 2.90 crore. Similarly, 93,145 property owners chose the offline payment method, availing themselves of a 10 percent rebate. Their contributions amounted to Rs 42.10 crore, with a rebate of Rs 2.10 crore.

Analysing the property tax collection data across the city's ten zones, it was revealed that residents of the Laxmi Nagar zone contributed the highest amount, followed closely by the Lakadganj zone. In contrast, the Satranjipura zone witnessed a relatively lower turnout of property owners availing of the rebate scheme. For those property owners who missed out on the earlier rebate opportunities, there is still a chance to secure a 5 percent rebate by making their payments before December 31. This additional incentive ensures continued compliance and offers property owners the chance to benefit from the rebate scheme.

Taxpayers' remarkable tax compliance not only contributes to the government's revenue goals but also reflects their commitment to civic responsibilities, fostering a sense of collective responsibility and propelling the city's progress towards sustainable development. The taxpayers enthusiastically embraced the initiative put forth by the former municipal commissioner, Radhakrishnan B., who actively engaged in shaping the future course of the city. The scheme received a resoundingly positive response, highlighting the taxpayers' enthusiasm and support for its implementation.
