Tamil Nadu Housing Board residents at Avadi up in arms over lack of facilities

Residents of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) in Avadi recently took to the streets to express their frustration over a range of issues plaguing their locality. More than 6,500 people bought plots of land in Avadi in the 1990s and built houses with the expectation that the TNHB would provide them with 21 essential facilities, including a bus stand, library, hospital, marriage hall, and police station.

One of the main concerns voiced by the residents is the lack of a reliable water supply. Despite the initiation of a drinking water scheme in Avadi in 2008, wards 40 and 41 still do not have access to the water supply network promised by the TNHB. Although two large overhead tanks, each with a capacity of 10 lakh litres, were built, they remain unused. As a result, the residents have been forced to purchase drinking water from tractors and lorries.

In addition to the water supply issue, the incomplete stormwater drain has become a major problem. The previous government had allocated 7.5 crore for the project, but the drain has not been properly laid, and certain sections remain unfinished. Consequently, water stagnation has become a common occurrence in the area. The residents have repeatedly appealed to the Avadi municipality to address the issue, but their requests have gone unanswered.

Residents are also concerned about the safety of children in the vicinity due to a 5-ft wide canal in the Nazarath School Annexe Lake. Several years ago, two children tragically lost their lives after falling into the canal, and even one of the residents, A Dharanidharan, fell into it and lodged a complaint with the Avadi municipality. However, no action was taken, prompting Dharanidharan to file a petition with the Human Rights Commission. Although the commission ordered the Avadi Corporation in 2022 to rectify the issue and compensate Dharanidharan, no progress has been made so far.

Furthermore, residents have alleged that the TNHB is attempting to sell plots of land that were originally designated for facilities such as libraries and hospitals.

K Tharpagaraj, the Avadi Corporation commissioner, has acknowledged the concerns raised by the residents and assured them that the process of providing water supply towards 40 and 41 is already underway. He also mentioned that efforts were being made to restore the water supply to TNHB. However, during the laying of the stormwater drain on Parithipattu-Poonamalee Road, the pipeline was removed. The Avadi Corporation has now begun the work of relaying the pipeline and is committed to ensuring a reliable water supply in the near future.

The grievances of the residents of TNHB in Avadi reflect their disappointment with the unfulfilled promises made by the authorities. The lack of essential amenities and infrastructure has greatly impacted their quality of life. The residents hope that their peaceful demonstration will draw attention to their plight and prompt swift action from the relevant authorities to address these long-standing issues.
