Land allotment by JK administration to landless families under PMAY commences

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently announced that the Jammu and Kashmir administration has initiated the allocation of 150 square yard plots to landless families in the region. The plots will be used for the construction of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY). Sinha stated that each landless family will receive five marlas of land, equivalent to 1,360 square feet.

The initiative aims to address the challenge of providing land to landless families, as identified by the Prime Minister a few years ago, in order to ensure that every underprivileged individual has a roof over their head. The provision for land allocation was approved by the administrative council for the purpose of constructing houses under the PMAY scheme. Sinha revealed that 2,711 landless families have already been allocated plots throughout Jammu and Kashmir. The remaining backlog is expected to be completed by March 2024.

Sinha emphasized the transformative impact this move will have on the lives of the poor and landless people in the region. He highlighted that the rural development department has identified 183,000 families without their own homes and that this initiative will not only provide shelter but also pave the way for their overall development. With housing needs addressed, Sinha expressed his belief that these families will be able to focus on improving their livelihoods and providing better education for their children, ultimately leading to socio-economic development.

The Lieutenant Governor affirmed the administration's commitment to providing land to the remaining landless families, emphasizing their duty to do so. He further clarified that the scheme does not discriminate on the basis of religion or region, and land has been allocated based on eligibility and in accordance with the law.

When asked about the government's demolition drive earlier this year to reclaim state land, Sinha assured that the administration has not targeted the poor. He acknowledged some instances of discrepancies but stated that they have been rectified, underscoring that the poor have the primary right to government resources. The allocation of land will be carried out in accordance with the law, with flexibility and sympathetic consideration where needed.

Regarding the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, Sinha reported that the annual journey is progressing smoothly, with pilgrims providing overwhelmingly positive feedback. He mentioned that efforts are being made to enhance traffic management and urged the media to widely publicize the relevant advisories and guidelines associated with the pilgrimage.

Sinha also mentioned that Srinagar has become a vibrant and bustling city after successfully hosting the G20 event and several national-level events. He commended the cooperation of the public and the positive role played by the media in these endeavours.
