Parking woes plague residents of HR Layout in Bengaluru

The residents of HR Layout, a burgeoning neighbourhood in Bengaluru, are facing mounting challenges due to poor parking management in the city. As companies make the shift from remote work to office-based operations, the area has witnessed a surge in office spaces in recent years, causing a major strain on parking infrastructure.

Residents complain that there is no clear distinction between commercial and residential zones and therefore it is not possible to confer what construes as designated parking.  At the moment, several vehicles are encroaching upon main road footpaths, making it difficult for pedestrians to walk. Despite the presence of spacious footpaths, people are forced to tread on the roads.

Many have expressed concerns about the vanishing green cover in the area as more spaces are converted into office setups. They have urged the  Bangalore Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city's municipal corporation, to ensure that these establishments possess sufficient parking facilities or find alternative parking solutions.

The exponential growth of working and co-working spaces in HR Layout, which has emerged as a favoured hub for businesses, has intensified the parking crisis. Perplexed residents question why these facilities lack their own parking areas.

Majority of the congestions comes from vehicles belonging to those utilising co-working spaces. Throughout the day, vehicles are parked across the premises, further reducing the available space in slip roads and side roads. Most roads within the area shrink to accommodate vehicles only one-way adding to the congestion.

A few disgruntled residents have emphasized the severity of the parking issues, particularly on the 19th main road. Where one can spot lorries and buses parked on the roads, with abandoned vehicles occupying the footpaths. Despite reporting these incidents to the police, no tangible actions have been taken to address the situation.

The escalating parking chaos in HR Layout highlights the pressing need for effective parking management strategies. As the area continues to attract more businesses, local authorities must proactively address this issue to ensure smoother traffic flow, preserve pedestrian safety, and protect the neighbourhoods’ green spaces.
