Stockholm Wood City, a revolutionary project in the Sickla neighbourhood of Stockholm, is being designed by Scandinavian architectural studios Henning Larsen and White Arkitekter. This innovative development aims to be the largest of its kind worldwide, utilizing mass-timber construction techniques and evoking the serene ambiance of a forest.
Referred to as the "world's largest wooden city" by Atrium Ljungberg, the developer behind the project, Stockholm Wood City surpasses all other ongoing developments in terms of timber usage. Encompassing an extensive area of 250,000 square meters, it will feature a remarkable 7,000 office spaces and 2,000 homes. By combining the expertise of Danish studio Henning Larsen and Swedish firm White Arkitekter, Stockholm Wood City promises to redefine sustainable urban architecture and provide a harmonious living and working environment inspired by the tranquillity of nature. As per the developer's statement, the developer envisions the district to incorporate nature-inspired elements and possess the essence of a forest.
According to the developer, engineered wood possesses the ability to develop a protective char layer on its surface when exposed to fire, which helps maintain its structural integrity and enhances overall safety. In addition to the fire-resistant qualities, utilizing wood as the primary construction material offers several advantages. Wood has the capacity to sequester carbon, thereby aiding in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Compared to concrete, wood also emits fewer emissions during the construction process. The developer highlighted these benefits as reasons to choose wood as a sustainable and environmentally-friendly option for constructing cities.
Constructing buildings with wood leads to a substantial decrease in climate impact throughout both the construction phase and the entire lifespan of the structures. Research has confirmed additional significant advantages, including enhanced well-being for occupants and a construction process that is faster and less disruptive in terms of noise.
Stockholm Wood City will incorporate a self-sufficient energy system, where energy will be produced, stored, and shared within the development. However, specific details regarding the project's energy production were not disclosed. The construction of Stockholm Wood City is scheduled to commence in 2025, and the first buildings are expected to be completed by 2027.The project will be implemented in sequential phases to gain valuable insights and knowledge from each phase, which can then be applied to subsequent stages of the project.
