Transforming Madurai's transportation landscape: Final DPR unveiled for metro project

In a significant development for the Madurai Metro Project, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has unveiled the final detailed project report (DPR) showcasing ambitious plans for the construction of 27 metro stations along a 32 km rail track between Thirumangalam and Othakadai. This announcement was made by CMRL Managing Director M. A. Siddique during a multi-department meeting held at the district collectorate on Wednesday.

The latest DPR marks a significant expansion compared to the initial proposal, which outlined 18 stations over a 30 km track. The revised plan includes a five-kilometre underground track and 27 kilometres of elevated corridors, demonstrating the project's commitment to enhancing connectivity in Madurai.

Of the 27 metro stations planned, three will be constructed underground, all located in the central zone of the city. CMRL MD Siddique explained that the elevated stretch will have approximately one station per kilometre, ensuring convenient access for commuters. Additionally, for every 1.5 kilometres, a station will be established along the underground section.

The submission of the DPRs for both the Madurai Metro and Coimbatore Metro projects is scheduled for July 15. Siddique expressed confidence that once construction work begins, the Madurai metro project will be completed within four years, heralding a new era of modern transportation in the city.

The multi-department meeting at the district collectorate saw the active participation of esteemed officials, including District Collector M. S. Sangeetha, Corporation Commissioner K. I. Praveen Kumar, and senior representatives from the revenue department and HR and CE department. Their presence underscores the collaborative efforts and commitment to ensuring the success of the Madurai Metro Project.

The Madurai metro's comprehensive network of 27 stations spread across a 32 km track will play a vital role in transforming the city's transportation landscape. The project aims to address the growing population and increasing traffic congestion by providing a reliable, efficient, and eco-friendly mode of transportation for Madurai residents and visitors.

With the DPR unveiling additional metro stations, the Madurai Metro Project promises to boost connectivity, reduce travel time, and enhance the overall quality of life for the people of Madurai.
