Proposal to legalize illegal colonies in Gurugram unveiled by district administration

The district administration of Gurugram has recently unveiled a proposal to the state government, seeking the regularization of illegal colonies within the city limits. Once approved, these colonies will be granted legal status, enabling the government to initiate essential development projects, including the installation of water and sewer lines, as well as the construction of roads.

In 2021, the district administration commenced surveys of 100 unauthorized colonies, with the objective of identifying those eligible for regularization. Out of the total, 60 colonies were deemed to meet the necessary criteria. According to the prescribed norms, illegal colonies occupying a minimum of 2 acres of land and featuring a 3-meter-wide road network qualify for the regularization process. As of now, the district administration has submitted a list of 11 colonies to the state government for consideration in the initial phase, while work is already underway in the remaining 49 colonies.

The first phase of the regularization plan primarily targets four colonies in both Farrukhnagar and Harsuru, alongside one colony each in Manesar, Badshapur, and Sohna. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav recently convened a meeting with officials from the town and country planning, revenue, and panchayat departments to discuss the legal recognition of these colonies. As these settlements lie outside municipal areas, granting them legal status is expected to address the existing deficiencies in civic infrastructure, as highlighted by officials.

The regularization of these colonies will be executed in accordance with the Haryana Management of Civic Amenities and Infrastructure Deficient Areas Outside Municipal Area (Special Provisions) Act of 2021. This policy, which was notified on July 19 last year, aims to rectify the deficiencies in basic amenities prevalent in unauthorized colonies. The DTCP conducted a thorough assessment of these settlements, considering factors such as location, area, number of houses, vacant plots, number of families residing, and date of development. According to DTCP records, approximately 500 illegal colonies are scattered across Gurugram and its surrounding areas.
