Mangaluru City Police call on landlords for thorough tenant background checks

DCP (crime and traffic) BP Dinesh Kumar has called upon landlords in the city to conduct thorough background checks on prospective tenants before renting out their houses and apartments. He emphasized this during a public grievance redressal meeting held at Urwa police station, one of the three meetings organized by the Mangaluru City police on Saturday, the others being held in Ullal and Surathkal.

Dinesh Kumar stressed the importance of the public's cooperation in implementing initiatives that benefit society as a whole. He urged individuals not to overlook their social and moral responsibilities in this regard. One of the major initiatives outlined by the Mangaluru City police is the goal of eliminating drug-related issues from the city by August 15. To achieve this, a special drive has been planned to raise awareness among students. The cooperation of the public, particularly auto-rickshaw drivers, is crucial in identifying and tracing the routes used for drug transportation. It was also assured that the identities of informants will be kept confidential.

Furthermore, DCP Dinesh Kumar mentioned that every police station maintains records of senior citizens, and monthly meetings are held with the elderly community. To ease the process for senior citizens, police personnel now visit the homes of individuals living alone for passport verification, eliminating the need for them to visit the police stations themselves.

Inspector Bharathi G, present at the meeting, advised house owners to maintain detailed records of their tenants and report any suspicious individuals residing in their rented properties to the police.

At the Ullal meeting, City Police Commissioner Kuldeep Kumar R Jain assured residents that all the issues raised during these gatherings would be promptly addressed by the relevant departments. He emphasized the coordinated efforts of the city police teams to combat the distribution of drugs, particularly ganja.

In a special crackdown on the use of cigarettes and gutka in the vicinity of educational institutions across the city, law enforcement officers searched 348 shops and establishments on Saturday. Among these, 153 shops were found selling cigarettes, gutka, or both, resulting in legal action being taken under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). The shopkeepers were fined Rs 200 each and cautioned against repeating the offense.

DCP Anshu Kumar, responsible for law and order, presided over the grievance meeting at Surathkal police station. Participants voiced their concerns regarding over speeding city buses and other vehicles, the use of high beam headlights, unauthorized parking on footpaths, inadequate bus shelters, traffic congestion, and the problem of buses being parked on roads at night. Officials encouraged the public to report traffic violations by contacting 9480802305 or 9480802321. In case of emergencies, individuals were urged to dial '112' to receive immediate police assistance.

These grievance redressal meetings provided a platform for the public to express their concerns and for the police to address these issues effectively. The active involvement and cooperation of both the community and law enforcement are vital in maintaining a safe and secure environment for all residents of Mangaluru.
