Thane Municipality achieves 25 percent property tax target recovery

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) triumphantly accumulated a remarkable Rs 200 crore in property tax revenues, achieving an impressive 25 percent of its fiscal year 2023–24 target in a mere 66 days of the first quarter. The Thane Municipal Corporation witnessed Majiwada Manpada emerge as the undeniable leader among the nine wards within the city, accounting for nearly 33 percent of the total property tax collected during this period. Following closely behind were the Vartak Nagar and Naupada-Kopri wards, both of which made significant contributions to the corporation's substantial revenue gains.

Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar acknowledged the significance of property tax as a vital revenue source, attributing the corporation's success to timely billing, enticing rebates for punctual taxpayers, and simplified payment methods that resonated positively with residents. With a recovery target of Rs 900 crore, the corporation surpassed expectations by already amassing Rs 200 crore before the end of the first quarter, marking a remarkable 90 percent increase compared to the previous fiscal year, when collections amounted to a mere Rs 108 crore.

Expressing gratitude to the cooperative residents, Bangar optimistically anticipates surpassing the collection goal and reaching Rs 1,000 crore. Responding to public demand, the deadline for early payments has been extended from June 15 to June 30, providing ample time for taxpayers to fulfil their obligations. The timely generation and distribution of tax bills for the fiscal year, starting in April, played a crucial role in this achievement. This timely provision stands in stark contrast to previous years when bills were often made available much later. SMS alerts were sent to citizens, and tax collection centres operated seamlessly in all ward offices, even during holidays, bolstering the accessibility of online payment facilities.

Furthermore, taxpayers can easily obtain payment receipts on propertytax.thanecity.gov.in or from the nearest ward office, with online options including internet banking, debit and credit cards, and UPI. The corporation aims to streamline the payment process, ensuring convenience for taxpayers without the need for physical visits or unnecessary interactions.

However, activists raised concerns about the neglect of the Majiwada-Manpada ward, which has consistently contributed significantly to civic funds. Residents highlighted issues such as exorbitant charges for water tanker services, inadequate public transport connectivity, and persistent traffic congestion on Ghodbunder Road. Their voices emphasize the need for an equitable distribution of resources and improvements to enhance the overall living experience.

As the Thane Municipal Corporation basks in the glow of its remarkable achievement, it remains committed to its mission of serving the community diligently. With the continued support of the residents and the implementation of innovative strategies, the corporation aims to build on its impact and accomplishments.
