HUDA selects two sites in Panchkula for slum dwellers' resettlement

Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has made significant progress in its efforts to eradicate slums in Panchkula. Following the announcement by Haryana Assembly speaker Gian Chand Gupta last month, wherein he pledged to provide one marla plot (approximately 272 square feet) to each slum dweller, HUDA has now identified two potential sites for the rehabilitation project.

In a recent meeting between HUDA chief administrator Ajit Balail Joshi and speaker Gupta, the authority revealed its serious commitment to the project. Two plots of land have been earmarked for the initiative, including a 40-acre tract in Khark Mangoli village and 20 acres in Sector 20. The proposed plan has been shared with speaker Gupta and is set to be presented to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for final approval.

Expressing his dedication to the cause, speaker Gupta emphasized the importance of rehabilitation of slum dwellers in Panchkula and confirmed that he has directed the relevant officers to work diligently on this matter. He also said a comprehensive plan was in the works and would soon be submitted to the Chief Minister for his consideration.

The origins of this ambitious project can be traced back to May 15 when speaker Gupta initially floated the idea of providing one marla plots or flats to slum residents. A crucial meeting was held at the MLA hostel in Sector 3, attended by prominent officials from the Haryana government, including Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, D S Dhesi, and HUDA chief administrator Ajit Balaji Joshi. The objective of the meeting was to develop a viable plan for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers, ultimately leading to the consensus that offering individual plots would be the most practical solution.

During the discussions, the potential inclusion of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, a housing scheme for the economically disadvantaged, was also considered as a means of extending benefits to those in need. Speaker Gupta expressed concern about the rapid proliferation of slums in Panchkula and urged district administration officials, as well as those from HUDA and the Municipal Corporation, to take stringent action to address this issue.
