NMC takes drastic measures to address dilapidated wadas

In a recent survey conducted by the municipal corporation, it has been discovered that there are 1,192 wadas in a deteriorated state. Among these wadas, the largest number of 701 are located in Nashik west, followed by Panchawati with 176 wadas, and Nashik east division with 127 wadas. In the past, there have been occasions where such wadas collapsed due to continuous rainfall. In the previous monsoon season, more than 15 wadas in the city partially collapsed.

Some months back, during nighttime, a wada situated near the Ashok Stambh region experienced a collapse. Fortunately, there were no individuals inside the wada at the time, and no casualties were reported as a result of the incident. The collapse was triggered when a car collided with the basement of the wada, causing the entire structure to weaken and eventually cave in during the night. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) regarded this incident with great concern and took appropriate measures to address the issue.

In response to a directive from the former NMC commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar, the town planning department of the municipal corporation recently conducted a fresh survey to assess the condition of deteriorated wadas and buildings in the city. This survey took place approximately three months ago. As the monsoon season is approaching, the civic administration has issued notices to the occupants of these dilapidated wadas, urging them to vacate their premises prior to the onset of rainfall.

NMC officials have already communicated instructions to all six divisional officers, emphasizing the need for prompt action in preparation for the upcoming monsoon. An official from the NMC stated that if the occupants of the deteriorated wadas do not comply with the recent notices to evacuate, the water and electricity services to those premises will be disconnected. If individuals continue to resist vacating the premises, they will be forcibly removed with the assistance of the local police.
