Empowering Communities: The People's Housing Project Initiative

The mandatory inclusion of affordable homes or People's Housing Projects (PPR) in housing projects within Kuala Lumpur has been announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This decision aims to tackle the existing shortage of affordable housing and meet the requirements of the underprivileged. The prime minister stressed that the government's goal of providing increased options for affordable housing to the people has yet to be achieved.

Drawing attention to the urgent housing issue in the capital city, the prime minister revealed that they receive around 3,000 applications for affordable housing or PPR each year, while Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) can only provide 300 units annually.

To address this issue, the prime minister declared that significant measures have been taken. He stated, "During a meeting I presided over two months ago, we implemented changes that mandate the inclusion of affordable housing units or PPR within any housing project seeking approval in Kuala Lumpur."

During the Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar responded to concerns raised by Fong Kui Lun (Bukit Bintang-PH) regarding the stringent criteria for renting a DBKL PPR unit. He assured, "I have instructed DBKL to make the necessary adjustments to alleviate the strict conditions imposed on PPR applications."

When asked by Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (Langkawi-PN) about potential overlaps among various housing agencies, Anwar revealed that the government has established a cabinet committee to streamline these agencies.

Under the supervision of the two deputy prime ministers, this committee is responsible for ensuring the proper coordination of housing programs and avoiding any unnecessary duplication.

Anwar emphasized the previous practice of creating new agencies whenever a problem emerged, which led to redundancy. The consolidation of these agencies aims to maximize their collective endeavors in order to achieve efficient and effective housing initiatives. The People's Housing Project, established in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, was a result of the efforts of the National Housing Department.

The People's Housing Project (PPR) was initiated in 1998 by the National Housing Department in Kuala Lumpur. It aimed to provide affordable housing options for the people. The project focused on addressing the housing needs of the underprivileged and mitigating the shortage of affordable homes. Through the PPR, the government aimed to ensure that housing projects in Kuala Lumpur incorporated affordable housing units. Over the years, the PPR has played a crucial role in addressing housing challenges and improving living conditions for individuals and families in need.
