The commissioner of the Corporation in Coimbatore, M Prathap, recently announced that 90% of the projects under the smart city mission have been finished in the city. He assured that the remaining projects will be completed by July. Prathap specified that only minor tasks are left for the knowledge and study centre being built on Addis Street, the Valankulam development project, and the non-motorized corridor. He further mentioned that the construction of the knowledge and study centre will be finished within two weeks. The centre, along with other similar centres constructed by different corporations and municipalities, will be inaugurated by the chief minister.
According to the commissioner, the development of Kurichi lake will be finished within a month, and the Valankulam lake development will be completed within 20 days. Additionally, there are two ongoing projects for non-motorized transport corridors. The one at Town Hall will be completed by the end of June, while the work on Crosscut Road will be finished by mid-July. Furthermore, a bio-mining project is underway to handle the disposal of nine lakh cubic meters of legacy waste at Vellalore dump yard, and it is expected to be ready by the end of July.
On May 8th, electricity minister V Senthil Balaji inaugurated several additional projects, including the Race Course model road, Krishnampathy lake development project, Kumarasamy lake development project, and the Nanjundapuram sewage treatment plant. During the inauguration, Minister Balaji also initiated the use of 200 vehicles for garbage collection, which included 100 battery-operated vehicles.
Coimbatore was among the cities chosen in the initial round of the Smart Cities challenge, where 20 cities competed for selection. The announcement of the selected top 20 cities was made by Shri Venkaiah Naidu, the Minister of Urban Development, on January 28th, 2016.

Covering an area of 28.7 acres, it is located in close proximity to another water body called Periya Kulam. Over time, the Selvachinthamani Lake has unfortunately been subject to substantial waste disposal. However, thanks to the Restoration Work carried out by the Coimbatore Corporation under the Smart City plan, this lake has received a new lease on life. As a result, the residents of Coimbatore can now appreciate the pristine beauty of this lake.
