L&T chosen to construct world's largest green hydrogen plant for NEOM

Larsen & Toubro's Power Transmission & Distribution Business has reached significant milestones in the construction of the world's largest green hydrogen plant's Power Elements and Grid packages. The plant is being built by NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) at Oxagon in Saudi Arabia's NEOM region. NGHC, a joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, aims to establish a mega plant to produce green hydrogen on a large scale, which will be exported globally in the form of green ammonia. The project has secured full financial close with the support of 23 local, regional, and international banking and financial institutions.

L&T was granted approval a few quarters ago to develop the Renewable Energy Generation, Storage, and Grid infrastructure for the project by Air Products, the system-integrating EPC Contractor and exclusive off-taker of the green ammonia produced. The contracts awarded to L&T have a total value of USD 2.779 billion. Substantial progress has been made in various activities such as surveys, design and engineering, establishment of temporary facilities, and procurement of long lead items.

Under these contracts, L&T will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a 2.2 GWac PV Solar Plant, 1.65 GW Wind Generation Balance of Plant, and a 400 MWh Battery Energy Storage System as part of the Power Elements package. Additionally, L&T will construct three 380 kV Switching Stations, 306 km of 380 kV Overhead lines, and underground cables required for the Kingdom's Grid network. The scope also includes the Energy Power Monitoring System (EPMS) for the entire network.

Larsen & Toubro's CEO and MD, S. N. Subrahmanyan, commended the bold vision of the Kingdom and the project proponents, emphasizing that large-scale initiatives like these have the potential to accelerate global energy transition. He further stated that these technology-driven projects align with L&T's growth aspirations and demonstrate the customer's trust in their professionalism, timely delivery, and quality.

T Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Sr. Executive Vice President (Utilities) at Larsen & Toubro, expressed pride in being associated with a project that will integrate 4 GW of renewable energy and enable the production of up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen per day.

Wolfgang Brand, Vice President of NEOM Green Hydrogen from Air Products, expressed enthusiasm for the progress made towards the world's largest green hydrogen production facility in NEOM. He mentioned that they are pleased to begin the full execution of this lighthouse project and are proud to collaborate with L&T in their ambition to produce carbon-free hydrogen using renewable energy.

NEOM Green Hydrogen Company's CEO, David R. Edmondson, emphasized the importance of having the right partners to lead the global energy transition and expressed excitement about working with Larsen & Toubro on the green hydrogen generation, grid infrastructure, and storage aspects of the project.
