Controversy rises over Indore land ownership, 53 tenants challenged to justify claims

Indore district administration has recently issued notices to 53 commercial and residential establishments in Gram Khajrani, located near Patnipura Square, demanding verification of land ownership. This initiative comes in light of a competing claim made by the Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (MPSRTC). The disputed property, spanning across 3 lakh square feet, is currently listed on the Public Assets Management (PAM) Portal for potential auctioning.

Shekhar Choudhary, the area's Tehsildar, stated that the property hosts approximately 53 structures, a blend of commercial and residential establishments. The occupants have been instructed to present documented proof of their ownership in an upcoming hearing set for June 5th. Should the occupants fail to demonstrate legitimate ownership, steps to vacate them will be initiated.

While the administration's move has sent shockwaves through the occupants, the latter argue that the notices have been served to 75 shopkeepers in total.

MPSRTC, the current claimant of the disputed property, has recently allocated INR 4.79 crores for developing a shopping complex on a part of the said land. This development is part of a larger plan to accommodate displaced shopkeepers. To back up this initiative, MPSRTC has deposited 25% of the total funds required.

In conclusion, the disputed land near Patnipura Square is currently in a state of limbo, with both the residents and the MPSRTC presenting their claims. As the hearing date approaches, the affected occupants hope for a fair resolution, underscoring the need for policies that ensure the secure rights of long-term occupants while allowing for regional development.
