New Delhi Municipal Corporation reports significant drop in construction waste collection

Construction and demolition waste collected in New Delhi during the previous financial year saw a decrease of more than 27 percent compared to the year before, according to documents from the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). This decline suggests that fewer construction-related activities took place last year in comparison.

The NDMC reported that a total of 19,819.87 metric tons of construction and demolition waste, including waste from private properties and buildings maintained by the NDMC, were collected from Lutyens' Delhi in the year 2022-23, as stated in the documents.

According to data obtained by PTI, the construction and demolition waste generated and collected in the year 2021-22 amounted to 27,272.76 metric tons. This indicates that 7,452.89 metric tons (a decline of 27.3 percent) less waste was collected last year compared to the previous year. Additionally, the amount collected in the last year was considerably lower than the 22,424.39 metric tons collected in 2020-21.

The NDMC has entrusted a private firm with the responsibility of waste disposal, which involves collecting the waste from the NDMC area and handing it over to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for proper disposal. Due to the absence of a construction and demolition waste processing plant, the NDMC relies on the MCD for waste disposal.

The officials have attributed the decrease in waste collection to the reduced number of construction activities in the area. NDMC Vice Chairman Satish Upadhyay stated that the decline is not a cause for concern and is dependent on the extent of construction and demolition activities carried out. He further explained that fewer such activities took place last year.

To ensure the proper disposal of construction and demolition waste and to maintain a dust and dirt-free environment, the NDMC has designated 15 sites/locations in the New Delhi area for the dumping of this waste, as mentioned by Upadhyay.

According to the documents, there was a significant decrease in the removal of construction and demolition waste from NDMC-maintained buildings in the year 2022-23, with 16,413.910 metric tons collected compared to the 24,951.6704 metric tons collected in 2021-22. Notably, there was an increase in the amount of waste removed from private properties, rising from 2,321.09 to 3,405.96 metric tons.

In summary, the construction and demolition waste collected in New Delhi during the last financial year experienced a decline of over 27 percent compared to the previous year. The NDMC attributed this drop to fewer construction-related activities taking place. The NDMC has entrusted a private firm with waste disposal responsibilities since they lack their own processing plant. The NDMC aims to ensure proper waste disposal and maintain a clean environment by designating specific sites for dumping the waste.
